Health Informatics Overview 1

By the end of the lesson, you would have a better understanding and overview of Health Informatics (HI). HI is a combination school of thoughts of Health Sciences, Communication Sciences, Information Sciences and Computer Technology. (How can "Computer Terminology and Concepts" be placed in these school of thoughts?)

So for this week lesson (7/11), we shall be covering Communication in Healthcare which can be grouped under Communication Sciences. For this lesson, I would like all of you to

1. Bring your notebooks/tablet PCs to class.
2. Install your computer with HeuCampus software.

3. Complete your e-Learning activities for "Computer Terminology and Concepts".

Hospital Information System (HIS) in Healthcare

Let's "GO E!" for this lesson. I'm going to integrate various e-learning tools which you have used along the way to achieve our goal. If you have notebooks, you can be anywhere in campus to go through this e-Learning session. If you don’t, you can use PCs @ E-Learning Plaza & H505 which have been booked for you.

Please note that we are going to commence the session on 25/7 (Fri) @ 2 pm. Group leader must ensure that your members are ready before commencing. Once you are ready, let's begin by following the instructions below.

There are 2 PARTS to the e-Learning session which you have to complete.

PART 1 - (Estimated completion time = 1 hour)

Web Design & Development

After the lecture on the "Introduction of Web Design", what do you think of these websites? What are the design issues? How can the websites be improved?
http://members.tripod.com/fuzzymartian/
http://www.dokimos.org/ajff/

I do encourage you to start to think & plan the look and feel of your website to avoid repeating these design issues. Planning is very important during your web design phase so work together gals & guys (remember the Storyboarding in one of the presentation slides?). Next, look at other individual or organisation websites: list down good & bad features of these websites.

Once you have done that, you may now consider web authoring tools to implement your design. Other that Microsoft FrontPage that is taught in class, explore other free web authoring tools such as Geocities, Freewebs, Angelfire & Webnode. You may even consider wiki & blog for your website!!!

Electronic Health Records Debate (The benefits of EHR outweights its disadvantages)

Dr Raj & I would like to congratulate both teams for presenting a very interesting and lively debate. You deserve a pat on your back after weeks of preparation and hardwork. I like the fact that you are using real-life experience and examples such as your clinical attachment, the NKF & Sichuan earthquake to put across your points. All of you are winners and I am sure the rest of your classmates would agree with me! They certainly now have better understanding of EHR as well as its benefits & disadvantages. Most importantly, how EHR would affect them directly/indirectly as to-be healthcare professionals. At the end of the day, EHR is here to stay but effective & appropriate measures to be taken up by relevant agencies to minimise its disadvantages such as security and confidentiality issues.

Computer Terminology and Concepts

I agree with you if today lecture is "quite boring" ;) But before you learn how to run, you must learn how to walk first, right?

Anyway, the topics which are covered today are the "bolts & nuts" of Information Technology. It is essential you understand the terms & concepts of the following before we begin to look at other issues.

Computer Terminology and Concepts
- Components of computer systems
- Hardware
- Programs
- Information
- Procedures
- People
- Information theory

As promised, you can view the video of iN2015 (An Intelligent Nation, a Global City, powered by Infocomm) at the following website http://www.ida.gov.sg/About%20Us/20070903145526.aspx

Please don't forget to do your e-learning activity & save it as your group no + e-learning topic e.g Group1 (Computer Terminology & Concepts). We shall use HeuCampus to send your files to me.
